5. William Carvalho

Manchester United were linked with the Portuguese midfielder during the summer and maybe back for him in January if they don’t manage to sign their higher profile midfield targets.

4. Sami Khedira

The German international looks set to leave Real Madrid in January as the Champions League holders look to cash in on him before his contract expires in the summer. Although United have been linked with Khedira, Arsenal appear to be his most likely destination.

3. IIkay Gundogan

The Borussia Dortmund midfielder is just easing his way back to full fitness and will be a target for United if he makes a full recovery before January. The German star was linked with a move to Old Trafford during David Moyes reign and it is thought he would be interested in moving to the 20 time league champions.

2. Arturo Vidal

Despite the Chilean’s recent disciplinary and injury problems, he is still one of the most highly sought after midfielders in the world. Vidal was probably Louis van Gaal’s main midfield target during the summer and the Dutchman could return for him in January.

1. Kevin Strootman

Van Gaal is known to be a great admirer of Strootman, having worked with him when he was manager of the Dutch national side. Even though AS Roma don’t want to sell the 24-year-old, United seem very keen on bringing him to Old Trafford.
