The 12 Big Money Flops In The Premier League This Summer Including Mario Balotelli, Chelsea & Manchester United Stars

Those that have cost the most and given the least.

This summer was the biggest spending window ever in Premier League history and whilst there have been some hits, there have also been a number who are definitely a waste of money.

Here are 12 from CaughtOffside.

Mario Balotelli, Liverpool – £16m

Starting with one that may seem somewhat controversial as Balotelli was considered a bargain initially at £16m, but with one goal to date and a number of lacklustre performances it’s looking like another shocker for the Italy international.

George Boyd, Burnley – £3m

Upon earning promotion from the Championship the Clarets admittedly didn’t have much to spend, but splashing £3m of their small budget on Boyd was a mistake of the highest order.

Remy Cabella, Montpellier – £12m

There was much excitement around St James’ Park when this supposed successor to Yohan Cabaye arrived, but Cabella has been far from impressive and looks lost in English football.

Brown Ideye, West Bromwich Albion – £10m

When the Baggies completed this club record signing from Dinamo Kiev something just didn’t seem right about it and sure enough Ideye can’t even get in the starting XI.

Bojan Krkic, Stoke City – £3m

It was a shock when the Potteries secured this forward from FC Barcelona and then when he started scoring prolifically in pre-season anticipation started brewing, but now Bojan watches most of his games from the bench.

Shane Long, Southampton – £12m

A huge fee to pay for a striker who has never scored double figures in the English top tier and Long is certainly not the forward that the Saints require – thank God for Graziano Pelle.

Dejan Lovren, Liverpool – £20m

Was the last of a trio of players to join the Reds from St Mary’s and was supposed to bolster their leaky defence, but seems to have attributed to them conceding more.

Filipe Luis, Chelsea – £15.8m

We’re not suggesting that Filipe is a bad player by any means, but in our minds spending almost £16m on a 29-year-old left-back and then never playing him is a big waste of money.

Harry Maguire, Hull City – £2.5m

This is another scenario where it is more the club’s fault than the players and having left Sheffield United the centre-back is already being linked with a return to Bramall Lane on-loan.

Emmanuel Riviere, Newcastle United – £5m

A goal-scorer was desperately needed, but this Frenchman has not provided it and Pardew will be pleased that one of the old guard has in the shape of Papiss Cisse.

Sandro, QPR – £8m

A popular choice at Tottenham Hotspur, but having spent £8m on him and giving the Brazilian hefty wages, for Sandro to then injure himself whilst celebrating in training is ridiculous.

Luke Shaw, Manchester United – £27m

Finally it is another perhaps controversial choice, but having started shakily at Old Trafford it’s going to take some great improvement for the 19-year-old to justify a fee that could reach £33m.
