The Sun recently held a vote through their Twitter account to find out who their followers believed was the world’s finest defender.

The following four received the most votes, and only one Premier League representative made the list…

4) Thiago Silva – PSG

The only surprise perhaps is that the brilliant Brazilian isn’t further up the list. Silva captained Brazil at the World Cup, but missed their semi-final humiliation through injury. He has established himself as the world’s most composed centre-back, excellent in possession and cool under pressure.

3) Sergio Ramos – Real Madrid

The Real Madrid man has been voted into the FIFPRO World Team Of The Year on an unbelievable five different occasions. He’s only 28, but has won 122 caps for Spain already.

2) Philipp Lahm – Bayern Munich

The World Cup winning captain is the best fullback in the world, but is so good with the ball at his feet that he’s been used as a deep-lying midfielder for his club under Pep Guardiola.

1) Vincent Kompany – Manchester City

The two-time Premier League winning captain came out on top in this vote. Kompany is wonderfully powerful, and a terrific leader. His physicality makes him the perfect modern defender, too.
