The 36-year-old midfielder currently has a deal at the Etihad Stadium until January, but a recent run of form – four goals in his last five games, including a crucial strike against his old club Chelsea – has sparked speculation that the Premier League champions could try to keep him for longer.

Lampard himself admits he is enjoying the chance to continue playing at this level, though he does not know of any official talks to extend his stay at the club for the moment, insisting that the rumours are just that and nothing more.

New York City FC’s season does not start until March, so there could be potential for Lampard to spend almost the entire season with City, though it was initially planned that the former England international would only be with the club for around half the campaign.

Lampard is quiet on whether this move could materialise, but admits he is enjoying life at his new club, which was seen as a controversial move after his long career at Stamford Bridge.

“I am contracted here until January,” he said. “I am enjoying every minute of training at this level and being able to get game time. That is as far as it goes at the moment.”
