Sergio Busquets – Barcelona

First up is Barcelona metronome Sergio Busquets. The Spaniard had an important role last year as he finally fully assumed deep-lying duties from Xavi, and the heir to the throne has proved more than capable of filling his mentor’s shoes. Busquets has all the guile and passing precision of Xavi, plus an extra dose of athleticism and physicality which his predecessor lacked. He made 30 starts for the Catalans last term, completing 92.5% of his passes. Incredibly, the immaculate Spaniard was dispossessed an average of only 0.5 times per game!Luka Modric – Real Madrid

After being labelled a flop in his first season at Real Madrid, Modric improved hugely last year, making himself the midfield key to Madrid’s Champions League win. The Croatian grabbed 6 assists in the league despite a deeper role, and provided an impressive 1.5 key passes a game. His dribbling and long passing were essential weapons for Madrid’s quick breaking counter-attacks.Gabi – Atletico Madrid

After a great career in Spain which passed largely unnoticed abroad, the dynamic midfielder finally had his crowning glory at the heart of Atletico’s title win. The captain embodied everything great about Atletico under Simeone: hard work, toughness and grit, but with genuine class, as was evident from the screamer he scored against Real Madrid in the vital home derby. His set-piece delivery was also a crucial part of Simeone’s strategy, and the corner he put in for Godin to head home at the Nou Camp effectively won his team the league.
