Mauricio Pochettino Defends Decision To Not Make Jan Vertonghen Spurs Captain

Tottenham boss backs up choice in skipper.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has insisted that his decision to hand the captaincy to Hugo Lloris rather than Jan Vertonghen is not down to the defender’s contract situation, the Daily Express reports.

The 27-year-old Belgian, who joined White Hart Lane two years ago, was strongly tipped to take the armband following the departure of Michael Dawson in the summer.

However, Pochettino instead handed the armband to France national team goalkeeper Hugo Lloris with Emmanuel Adebayor and Younes Kaboul as his vice captains.

Many believed the decision was down to Vertonghen stalling on committing to a new deal, but the manager has sought to rubbish those claims.

“I pick the captain,” Pochettino said.

“My decision was to give the armband to Kaboul and to decide that the vice captains are Adebayor and Lloris.

Asked if his selection was based on Vertonghen’s contract situation, he added: “No, it is not about that.”
