Tony Adams career best XI: Arsenal stars feature heavily, as do some surprising Manchester United additions…

At 48-years-old he is possibly a little bit old to be getting back in the game, but the Gunners could really use a defender like Tony Adams considering their defensive worries this season.

Mr. Arsenal spent his entire career with the North London team, making a massive 669 appearances for the club. He also made 66 appearances for England, playing in a number of Euro and World Cup competitions.

Here is a best XI of players Tony Adams played with during his lengthy career, according to Squawka:

GK) David Seaman

Adams played with Arsenal and England goalkeeper David Seaman for over a decade, the reliable shot-stopper making 564 appearances for the North London club.

Arsenal found it notoriously difficult to replace Seaman after he left in 2002, with Wojciech Szczesny arguably the closest they have come to date.

DR) Gary Neville

If Tony Adams is Mr. Arsenal, then Gary Neville is certainly Mr. Man United.

Neville made 400 appearances for the club during a career that lasted nearly two decades, and was praised for his work-rate, desire, and fantastic attitude.

DC) Sol Campbell

Despite only playing one season together, Campbell clearly had a huge impact on Adams. After his controversial switch from North London rivals Tottenham, Campbell went on to become the long term replacement for the Arsenal captain.

He was part of the Arsenal Invincibles team in 2003/04, and despite joining from their arch rivals he went on to become a Gunners legend.

DC) Martin Keown

Keown and Adams were the two defenders largely credited for Arsenal’s defensive stability for so many years, with Keown spending a fantastic 11 years at the club.

He was a real no nonsense defender, the type you barely see in the game any more, but he was consistently reliable during his lengthy spell at Arsenal.

DL) Ashley Cole

Although the pair would have only spent a short time in the Arsenal team together, Ashley Cole’s ability was plain to see from the moment he broke into the team in 2001/02.

Although generally hated by Arsenal fans after his controversial move to Chelsea in 2006, you cannot deny that Ashley Cole was one of the best left-backs in the world for years and years.

DM) Patrick Viera

Arguably one of the most dominant midfielders in the history of football, Patrick Vieira was a fantastic servant for Arsenal during his time there.

An unknown gem unearthed by Arsene Wenger, the Frenchman went on to captain Arsenal through their unbeaten season in 2003/04 after Adams retired.

ML) Marc Overmars

An absolutely devastating player during his time at Arsenal, the Dutchman regrettably only spent three years in London before making the move to Barcelona.

He was a vital part of the Gunners set up that won the double in 1997/98, despite it only being his first season at the club.

MR) Paul Scholes

A superbly gifted midfielder, Paul Scholes played with Adams in the England team for years.

For years Manchester United were Arsenal’s main title rivals in the Premier League, but Adams still maintained a healthy respect for his compatriot.

CAM) Dennis Bergkamp

Labelled as one of the most important signings in Arsenal’s history, Dennis Bergkamp was one of the most technically gifted footballers that ever lived.

The Dutch star almost single handedly started a revolution at Arsenal which changed the entire style of football at the club.

His vision was unparalleled, and the assists and goals he produced were always of the highest quality.

ST) Alan Shearer

Alan Shearer would make it into most player’s career XIs, and it’s easy to see why. He has scored more Premier League goals than any other player, and was equally as prolific for England.

He and Adams were involved in the international set-up pretty much simultaneously, and enjoyed a number of successful years together.

ST) Thierry Henry

The Frenchman is arguably the greatest player ever to grace the Premier League, scoring an unbelievable 226 goals in 369 games for the Gunners.

He was converted from a left-winger to an out and out striker by Arsene Wenger, and almost instantly secured his place as an Arsenal legend with his goalscoring exploits.

He is still loved by Arsenal fans to this day despite leaving for Barcelona in 2007, and was a certainty to make Adam’s list to lead the line.
