Overrated footballers: Mario Balotelli makes the list
Former Liverpool defender and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher told Monday Night Football the Liverpool side he believes should start against Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.
Carragher wants four changes from the team that beat QPR, with the Reds not fielding a recognised striker.
GK) Simon Mignolet
Naturally, Carragher assumes the Belgian stopper will retain his place between the sticks.
DR) Glen Johnson
Johnson’s fit again, but will have an almighty difficult evening against Cristiano Ronaldo.
DL) CHANGE: Alberto Moreno
Carragher wants summer signing Alberto Moreno to replace Jose Enrique at left-back, and the majority of Liverpool fans would agree wholeheartedly with the decision.
DC) Martin Skrtel
The Slovakian needs to seriously up his game after another shaky Premier League performance.
DC) Dejan Lovren
Perhaps strangely, Carragher would stick with the out of form Lovren instead of selecting Mamadou Sakho alongside Skrtel.
DMC) Steven Gerrard
Carragher would deploy Gerrard in a deeper midfield role again, after he was used further up the field versus QPR.
MC) Jordan Henderson
Henderson is one of the first names on the team-sheet, and will need another all-action display to unsettle Real Madrid’s brilliant midfielders.
MC) CHANGE: Joe Allen
Allen could come in for Emre Can, and provide a better passing option in the centre. His ability to retain the ball could be vital.
AMR) CHANGE: Coutinho
Following his impressive weekend cameo, Carragher wants Rodgers to start Coutinho on the right, and move Sterling central. At his best, the mercurial Brazilian playmaker has the ability to win the match for the Reds.
AML) Adam Lallana
Carragher would keep Lallana out on the left wing, with the English summer signing continuing to improve since his £26m move.
FC) Raheem Sterling
Carragher wants Liverpool’s most exciting player to play in a new ‘false-9’ role for the Reds. He’s never been used here before, but his work-rate and speed makes him a more dangerous option than the misfiring Mario Balotelli.
