Manchester United News And Rumour Roundup: Chelsea Striker Crisis, Welbeck Wanted To Leave For A Year And Interest In Midfielder Reignited

The biggest stories on Wednesday for the Red Devils.

Manchester United renew their interest in Inter Milan midfielder Fredy Guarin

The Colombia international was strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford over the summer, but in the end nothing materialised.

However, after turning down a switch to Zenit St Petersburg, Inter are now ready to sell the 28-year-old to the Red Devils, according to the Daily Star.

Manager Louis van Gaal views Guarin as the ideal alternative to Juventus star Arturo Vidal, who now looks unlikely to leave Turin.

United fans have not seen the best of me yet says Luke Shaw

The left-back arrived at the Theatre of Dreams over the summer in a £27m switch from Southampton, but has struggled with form and fitness ever since.

However, after making the third appearance for his new side in the 2-2 Premier League draw with West Bromwich Albion on Monday the 19-year-old says he can do better.

“They haven’t seen the best of me yet. I know I haven’t been up to my full potential and I think maybe people can see that at the moment,” Shaw was quoted by the Guardian.

Chelsea short of strikers ahead of league clash with the Red Devils

With Diego Costa already sidelined with a hamstring problem there was more concern for Jose Mourinho on Tuesday as Loic Remy was forced off the pitch during their Champions League encounter with Maribor.

Remy scored the opener for the Blues in a 6-0 rout, but the France international also damaged his groin in the process and Mourinho now only has 36-year-old Didier Drogba as an available striker, reports the Telegraph.

This could be good news for van Gaal’s side who host the table toppers on Sunday.

Danny Welbeck considered leaving for a year before joining Arsenal

Having come through the ranks at the 13-time Premier League champions it is perhaps something of a surprise to hear Welbeck had wanted to leave for a long time.

The England international joined the Gunners on transfer deadline day in the summer for £16m and is clearly glad he did so.

“Over the past year or so, I started to think about what’s best for me because at the time I was playing on the left wing a lot and in a 4-4-2, which is very difficult for me because I can’t make an impact on the game,” Welbeck was quoted by the Mirror.

United job was too big for David Moyes says predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson

Despite it widely being believed Ferguson handpicked Moyes as his successor, the latest comments from the Scot would suggest that was not the case.

The former Everton man was sacked just 11 months after taking charge and the opinion that the squad was too old has been refuted by Sir Alex who says the job was simply too big for the 51-year-old.

“Chelsea started the current season as favourites for the title, with a squad that also had six players in their 30s. I don’t hear any grumbles about the age of their group. He hadn’t realised just how big United is as a club,” Fergie was quoted by the Mirror.
