7) Ability

There’s no doubt that Hazard has the actual footballing ability to be the world’s best. As was evident from his second goal last night, Hazard has everything he needs already.

He took a high pass out of the air with immaculate touch, dribbled into the box, switched the ball from one foot to another and then smashed it home.

6) Physicality

While Hazard is never going to have the aerial presence or physical power of Cristiano Ronaldo, he has been born with the amazing low-centre of gravity that Lionel Messi has, which allows him to change direction more suddenly and at tighter angles than any defender can match.

5) Age

Hazard is only 23. In a few years time he will have amazing amounts of top-level experience for such a young player. If he peaks around 28, as modern footballers tend to do, Messi will be 32.

The Argentinian will probably still be brilliant, but Hazard will have the edge on him physically by then.

4) Coaching

Hazard has had the benefits of many different schools of coaching in his career already – from the legendary Belgium set-up which is producing so many good players at the moment, through the detailed attacking coaching of Rudi Garcia at Lille, to the discipline of Jose Mourinho.

3) Flair

The best players will always have room for some flair, a little arrogance which shows the world just how easy they are finding the game.

Ronaldo and Messi are ruthlessly efficient goal-machines, and still squeeze some glorious trickery into every game.

Hazard has the same appreciation of the inherent theatre of football.

2) Team

This Blues team are growing every week and will allow Hazard to challenge at the top level for a long time.

He is developing with them, and the team is largely built around his attacking instincts. This group of players will be able to take the Belgian to the top.

1) Attitude

The only thing that could hold a player of Hazard’s ability back is a bad attitude – and his is exemplary.

In fact, Hazard’s father even spoke to Mourinho last week, telling him that his son needs to be more arrogant and self-centred.

Messi and Ronaldo are the best because, while they are team-players, they are also ultimately focused on themselves.
