6. Sami Hyypia – Willem II to Liverpool, 1999
Spent a decade with the Reds and was a stalwart during all of that time, becoming a real Kop favourite in the process before leaving for Bayer Leverkusen and later management.
5. Marc Overmars – Ajax to Arsenal, 2000
Spent just three years with the Gunners before FC Barcelona came in and snapped him up, but the Dutchman’s mixture of pace and skill helped Arsene Wenger to his first English title in 1997/98.
4. Jaap Stam – PSV Eindhoven to Manchester United, 1998
To many this centre-back was one of the best defenders that ever graced the division and would have spent longer at Old Trafford if it weren’t for a public bust-up with manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
3. Ruud van Nistelrooy – PSV Eindhoven to Manchester United, 2001
The same buying and selling club here, but this time it was a striker who made his mark at the Theatre of Dreams with van Nistelrooy being prolific in front of goal before being sold to Real Madrid in 2006.
2. Robin van Persie – Feyenoord to Arsenal, 2003
Just sneaking ahead is this forward, who cost the North Londoners just £2.75m when they first bought him, before being sold for £24m to the Red Devils nine years later where he has since won a league title.
1. Luis Suarez – Ajax to Liverpool, 2011
The newest purchase on the list, but in our minds the best of the lot with Suarez scoring 31 league goals in just 33 games the season before be left for Barca – earning the PFA Player of the Year award in the process.
