Five players that have turned down a move to Old Trafford.

Manchester United were once one of the most attractive club’s to play for in the world. To be wanted by them was like gaining accepted to moving into the Playboy mansion, but those days seen rather far gone now as the club can no longer just announce their interest in a player and expect to pick him up. Sure, they enjoyed some positive recruitment over the summer, but they didn’t get everyone they wanted and below are just some of the names that turned them down since Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement.

Arjen Robben – Bayern Munich

The tricky Dutch winger has been a target for the club before, but rumour had it that new boss Louis Van Gaal had been keen on reuniting with him again in the Premier League. However, far from showing any inters, the 30-year-old wide man rejected any notion of a move to the Northwest and declared his loyalty to his current employers instead.

Thomas Muller – Bayern Munich

Another Bayern player and another superstar to reject United’s advances. Muller is one of the finest attacking players in Europe, and United, naturally, were interested in his signature and even put a huge offer on the table to bring him to Old Trafford. However, both the player and the club weren’t interested and he quickly penned a five-year deal to stay at the Alianz Arena.

Victor Valdes – Free agent

The Spanish international looked all set to be joining Liverpool, only for the news to break on Friday that he was just about ready to link up with the Red Devils instead. Louis Van Gaal reportedly offered him a short term deal, but he is not thought to be keen on acting as Daid de Gea’s deputy.

Toni Kroos – Real Madrid

Then at Bayern, a proposed move for the midfield maestro had been mooted several times before the summer had even started. With David Moyes’ meek midfield being cut open at every opportunity and not offering much going forward, the club decided that they would shoot for the stars. Kroos, though, only had eyes for Real Madrid and ended up joining them for a relatively low fee.

Cesc Fabregas – Chelsea

Fabregas still determined to make a go of it at Barcelona last summer when David Moyes first declared an interest. That and the fact that he probably didn’t want to play for Moyes in a side that was doomed to fail following Ferguson’s departure. However, United came back for him again this summer, though this time he was apparently forced to reject their advances by his girlfriend, who wanted a move to London, which she got when Fabregas joined Chelsea.
