Five Reserve Goalkeepers Who Are Better Than Liverpool First Choice Simon Mignolet

Five players who don’t get a game but could replace the disappointing Mignolet.

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has come in for some real criticism this season – with the goalkeeper’s lack of command and organisational skills contributing to the side’s disorganised and leaky defence which is the root of their troubles both domestically and in Europe.

The Reds have already been linked with the likes of Victor Valdes as a replacement for the Belgian, but Mignolet has been so poor that there are plenty of reserve goalkeepers across Europe who could get a game for Brendan Rodgers’ side. Here are five:

Keylor Navas (Real Madrid)

Real Madrid signed goalkeeper Keylor Navas from Levante this summer on the back of a fine World Cup with Costa Rica and excellent campaign in La Liga, but he is yet to force his way past Iker Casillas and into Carlo Ancelotti’s side, whilst reports have also linked Real to another stopper in Manchester United star David de Gea.

Petr Cech (Chelsea)

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech was still one of the world’s finest last season under Jose Mourinho, but lost his place this summer when Belgian international Thibaut Courtois returned from three years at Atletico Madrid and has been unable to regain it, meaning that he is likely to move on in January.

Marc Andre ter Stegen

One of two new goalkeepers signed this summer to replace Victor Valdes at Barcelona, young German Marc Andre ter Stegen is having to make do with a place on the bench behind Claudio Bravo. The former Borussia Monchengladbach man is one of Europe’s finest young goalkeepers and probably deserves first team action.

Willy Caballero (Manchester City)

Manuel Pellegrini moved to secure experienced stopper Willy Caballero from former club Malaga this summer to provide competition for England international Joe Hart and, from the little we’ve seen of him in the English game, he’s a more competent number one than Mignolet.

Sergio Romero (Sampdoria)

Argentina international Sergio Romero was so impressive at this summer’s World Cup that he was nominated for the golden glove, despite being unable to get a game whilst on loan at Ligue 1 runners-up AS Monaco, a situation that has continued on his return to Serie A and Sampdoria.
