Arsene Wenger reckons Kieran Gibbs is the best left-back in the Premier League right now, but we don’t think he’s quite there yet!

Here’s our top 10.

10) Ryan Bertrand – Southampton (on loan from Chelsea)

While not good enough for Chelsea, Bertrand is proving at Southampton that he’s a solid Premier League defender. He’s quick, and has the ability to nip in front of attackers and steal possession.

9) Danny Rose – Tottenham

Rose is keeping young Welshman Ben Davies out of the Spurs starting XI. The Englishman is feisty, works very hard, and is potentially underrated due to shaky form earlier on in his career.

8) Luke Shaw – Manchester United

Would have been rated higher last season, but has failed to hit the ground running at Old Trafford.

7) Aleksandr Kolarov – Manchester City

Superb going forward and very powerful, Kolarov is occasionally a liability defensively, so rarely starts against bigger teams.

6) Alberto Moreno – Liverpool

Moreno has been the best of a very bad bunch of Liverpool defenders so far. The young Spaniard consistently overlaps his winger, and could develop into one of the best in the business.

5) Gael Clichy – Manchester City

The Frenchman is slightly more defensively stable than the man he rotates the position with – Kolarov.

4) Kieran Gibbs – Arsenal

Aged 25, Gibbs is finally fulfilling his potential, and deserves his place high in this list, and potentially in the England starting XI too. His goal versus Anderlecht was of huge importance to the Gunners, too.

2) Filipe Luis – Chelsea

The Brazilian international proved last term with Atletico Madrid that he’s one of the very best left-backs in Europe, although he hasn’t had the playing time with Chelsea yet that his ability deserves.

2) Leighton Baines – Everton

Baines has one of the sweetest left feet in the Premier League, and it enables him to put him dangerous crosses and score from range.

1) Cesar Azpilicueta – Chelsea

Defensively exceptional, Azpilicueta is powerful, and hardly ever gives the ball away. In short, he’s the perfect Jose Mourinho defender, and is keeping the superb Filipe Luis out of the side (although that could change following Azpilicueta’s weekend red card.)
