GK – Victor Valdes

This one could still happen with the goalkeeper still without a club after leaving FC Barcelona in the summer, although he is currently training with Manchester United.

RB – Dani Alves

Another that remains a possibility with the Brazilian in the final year of his current contract at the Nou Camp, but there are rumours Barca are looking to extend that.

CB – Gary Cahill

Back in January 2012 talks between the England international and Chelsea had broken down, but the Reds went quick enough to snap up the centre-back from Bolton Wanderers and had to settle for Sebastian Coates instead.

CB – Nemanja Vidic

It was club legend Jamie Carragher that revealed that then manager Rafael Benitez tried to sign this Serbian back in 2006, but the defender chose to join the Red Devils instead.

LB – Fabio Coentrao

Before Alberto Moreno was snapped up this Portugal international was being touted as part of a deal to take Luis Suarez to Real Madrid, which never happened and the Uruguayan left for Catalonia instead.

RM – Marco Reus

This Borussia Dortmund attacker is likely to leave the Signal Iduna Park next summer when his release clause plunders to £19.8m, but with some big names involved the Merseysiders stand little chance of landing him anymore.

CM – Mario Gotze

When Kenny Dalglish was scouting Jordan Henderson back in 2010 when he was at boyhood club Sunderland the Scot was also keeping tabs on this German and as good as the England international is he is no Gotze.

CM – Cesc Fabregas

Having seen the Spaniard’s performances for the Blues so far this season Brendan Rodgers is probably wishing he made more of an effort to land Fabregas, who was made available by Barca and left for £30m.

LM – Cristiano Ronaldo

Amazingly Gerard Houllier wanted to sign this then teenager from Sporting Lisbon, but his wage demands were deemed too much and the rest, as they say, is very painful history.

ST – Radamel Falcao

Not just once, but twice the Reds missed the opportunity to sign this Colombian, with the first time being back in 2009 before he joined FC Porto and the next time was over the summer just gone when Falcao opted for rivals United.

ST – Diego Costa

This is the one that really could have been, with the Merseyside outfit making a bid in the summer of 2013 before Costa had dazzled in La Liga with nothing ever materialising and now the 26-year-old is the league’s top-scorer with the Blues.
