Six Man United Flops That Became Great Elsewhere: Arsenal And Ex-Man City Stars Both Included

Six former Manchester United stars that boosted their careers away from the club.

Manchester United, one of the most successful clubs in the world, have often had a steady stream of great talent displaying their ability on the hallowed Old Trafford turf. However, not all of them seemed to be all they were cracked up to be. Some of the names were billed highly, only for them to leave with less than impressive records. But just because they weren’t huge success stories at United doesn’t mean they were down and out, as the six names below show, it is possible to enjoy highly successful careers elsewhere.

6. Danny Welbeck

Though he’s only just joined Arsenal, he’s already showing just how vital he can be to a club when used properly. Welback was hotly tipped to be a future star at United, and though he showed some glimpses he often failed to live up to expectation. He has began life in north London well, having already bagged his first a senior hat trick and providing the Gunners with a goalscoring outlet for the creative talent around him and is already well on his way to clocking up double figures.

5. Carlos Tevez

Tevez technically wasn’t a Man United player, having joined on a two-year loan deal from West Ham. He was often a figure of frustration during his time at the club, bagging a handy 14 one season and a less than impressive five in the other. He did form an exciting trio with Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, but he was always the quieter of the three. United tried to keep him, but he opted to join Manchester City instead where he went on to play a central role in their first Premier League title win and is now busy keeping Juventus at the summit of Serie A.

4. Diego Forlan

The Uruguayan remains one of the great ‘what if’s’ of English football. Arriving from South America with a big reputation, the striker just couldn’t find the net with any sort of regularity and was quickly shipped out to Villarreal. However, once in Spain the floodgates opened, and he became one of the most prolific marksmen in Europe before being picked up by Atletico Madrid where he repeated the feat. An unsuccessful spells with Inter Milan began to herald the end and he is now seeing out his career in Japan.

3. Giuseppe Rossi

Having come through the youth ranks at United there was a huge buzz around his future when he started to make his way into the senior side. However, one goal in a handful of appearances (and the same again at Newcastle) saw him head to Villarreal like Forlan had before him. There, he replicated the Uruguayan’s feats by establishing himself as an intelligent striker with a prolific edge. Injuries have hampered his career along thew way, but he is still highly regarded at Fiorentina, where he is now.

2. Gerard Pique

The big Spaniard looked more like Bambi on ice during his time at United, as he often struggled to keep up wight the pace and physicality of the Premier League. He somehow managed to win a move back to his native Barcelona, though, and quickly managed to turn himself into a veritable brick wall of a defender with a spectacular eye for goal. He has gone on to win everything there is to win in the game and even bagged himself an international pop star for a girlfriend to boot!

1. Paul Pogba

Letting Pogba go is undoubtedly a sore point with United. Having arrived at the club as a teenager he begged Alex Ferguson to let him play, but the Scot didn’t relent, so he joined Juventus instead. Since then he has gone on to become one of the world’s most in-demand players and is wanted by, well, everyone. His performances go from strength to strength and it may not be long before he is considered as a potential Ballon d’Or winner.
