QPR defender Rio Ferdinand has told fans how his then captain Roy Keane cut him down to size during his first day training with Manchester United, reports the Daily Mail.

The veteran centre-back was made the world’s most expensive ever defender back in 2002, when the Red Devils spent over £30m to sign him from Leeds, but despite Ferdinand’s pedigree, Keane let him immediately know what it meant to play for Manchester United…

“On my first day of training, he (Keane) gave me an absolute rollocking for playing an easy square ball instead of looking to do something positive,” Ferdinand said.

“I saw that day why United were winners and why Roy was at the heart of it.”

Both Ferdinand and Keane have released controversial autobiographies recently, but this latest claim is hardly unexpected news, given the ferocity with which Keane captained the Red Devils during his Old Trafford tenure.

The former skipper now works as the assistant manager for both Aston Villa and Ireland, while Ferdinand is sitting on the bench for QPR, and will likely retire come the end of the season.
