10. Martin Skrtel, Liverpool
Reds fans that have endured their side’s poor performances this season may not agree with this, but Skrtel is a decent central defender that just needs better support.
9. Curtis Davies, Hull City
Last term this 29-year-old proved that he was not the inconsistent figure previously seen at Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion and is a real force at the back for the Tigers.
8. Winston Reid, West Ham United
What a campaign it has been for the Hammers so far and this New Zealand international is once again a key figure in defence and has been linked with some big clubs.
7. Jan Vertonghen, Tottenham Hotspur
May not be able to get into the Spurs team but that is more the fault of manager Mauricio Pochettino than the Belgium international and with Tottenham’s results being poor currently perhaps Vertonghen should be drafted back in.
6. Ron Vlaar, Aston Villa
At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil this Netherlands international showed that he is a top-class player and the Villa captain will play a big part in any success they have this term.

Under Louis van Gaal’s new regime this 22-year-old has already shown that being used as a utility man was simply holding him back from playing as the centre-back that he was originally bought as.
4. Laurent Koscielny, Arsenal
Whilst the form of Per Mertesacker has greatly fallen his Gunners central defensive partner continues to impress and Arsene Wenger will want him back from injury as soon as possible.
3. Gary Cahill, Chelsea
Being named in the PFA Team of the Year last season finally proved that Cahill had made it to be considered a top-class centre-back and that is good news for the Blues and England.

However, he is still not quite as good as his teammate and captain who at 33-years-old looks as good at the back as he ever has and will be a big loss when he eventually retires.
