Most would still consider Marouane Fellaini an expensive Man United flop at £27.5m, but to be fair t0 the Belgian, he’s at least starting to show supporters why former manager David Moyes shelled out such enormous money for his services in the summer of 2013.

He bagged a beauty against West Brom last week, and followed it up with another strong performance against league leaders Chelsea on Sunday.

Whether he could properly resurrect his Old Trafford career is yet to be seen – but here’s five stars he could try to emulate – who have come back from the brink at their respective clubs.

Ryan Mason

If you asked any Tottenham fan during the summer who they thought would be starting in central midfield this season, very, very few would have named 23-year-old Ryan Mason. The Englishman had spent five seasons on loan at some uninspiring clubs, but has finally started to fulfil this potential under Mauricio Pochettino, who probably hadn’t heard even heard of Mason last term!

Cesar Azpilicueta

The Spaniard is now rated as the best left-back in the Premier League, but there was a time when he couldn’t get in the Chelsea XI under Jose Mourinho, and fans couldn’t pronounce his name! Now, ‘Dave’ as he was once known, is part of the furniture at Stamford Bridge, and is keeping Filipe Luis, one of the best defenders in Europe, out of the side.

Aaron Ramsey

Gunners fans must feel pretty guilty for booing their brilliant Welsh midfielder once upon a time… Ramsey suffered a leg-break some years back, and badly struggled to find his form in the seasons that followed, but in 2013/14 – he was comfortably Arsenal’s best player. And he capped a brilliant personal season with a goal in the FA Cup final.

Steven Naismith

Naismith was signed from Rangers two seasons ago, and has been very much an uninspiring utility player for the Toffees. This term however, his form has meant he’s one of the first names on the team-sheet, and England internationals such as Ross Barkley and Leon Osman have had to rotate  to accommodate the feisty Scot.

Diego Costa

It’s difficult to see Costa as an especially maligned figure right now, due to his blistering start at Chelsea and his status as one of the best strikers in the world. It didn’t happen for him straight away at Atletico Madrid though, and before last term, he’d only reached double figures for goals twice in eight seasons!
