Five Things Brendan Rodgers Can Do To Save Liverpool’s Season That Have Nothing To Do With Mario Balotelli

Over the past decade since Roman Abramovich took the helm at Chelsea, countless big money players have arrived at Stamford Bridge, only to fail to live up to their price-tags, often because they were never given the chances and the time to settle.

Here’s ten stars who arrived with big reputations, but will regret ever signing for the super rich West Londoners…

10) Mateja Kezman

The striker was phenomenal in Holland, bagging 105 goals in 122 appearances for PSV. At Chelsea though, he transformed from a lethal finisher to a hapless journeyman – going on to represent seven further clubs, and score just 37 more league goals until he retired in 2012!

9) Andriy Shevchenko

The Ukrainian arrived for a monstrous £30m fee, but looked a shadow of the player that won a Ballon D’or with AC Milan. Shevchenko was eventually shipped back on loan to Italy, but he never found his true form again.

8) Marko Marin

Joining Chelsea in 2012, Marin barely got a chance at Stamford Bridge – and has been shipped on loan to Sevilla and Fiorentina during the past two seasons, having lost the enthusiasm of his youth.

7) Oriel Romeu

A tremendously talented holding midfielder, Romeu’s development stunted at the Bridge due to being consistently sent out on loan. He needs to leave permanently to revive his career.

6) Gael Kakuta

The young Frenchman was once labelled ‘the future of Chelsea’, but uninspiring loan spells have played their part in his minimal development. Aged 23, he;s currently on loan at Rayo Vallecano – his sixth temporary club.

5) Josh McEachran

McEachran was supposedly the future of England’s midfield, but the depth of excellent Chelsea players in his way has restricted his access to the first-team. Aged 21, he’s on loan at his fifth club, this time in Holland with Vitesse.

4) Fernando Torres

The most obvious player Chelsea ruined is the now hapless Spaniard. Costing the Blues £50m, Torres simply could not find his form that saw him regarded as the world’s best forward at Liverpool. He’s now struggling on loan at AC Milan.

3) Victor Moses

Moses was tearing the Premier League up while at Wigan, but Chelsea signed him for the bench, which ruined his development. Liverpool did exactly the same when they took him on loan, although he’s enjoying some decent form this year with Stoke, who are actually giving him some game time.

2) Yuri Zhirkov

The Russian cost a huge £18m fee in 2009, but was never deployed in his proper position as a left wing-back – which probably explains why he only lasted two years in England before moving back to Russia where he’s never been the same since.

1) Shaun Wright-Phillips

The most exciting player in English footballer back in 2005, the Blues shelled out a huge £21m fee to bring SWP to Stamford Bridge, but he was never given the opportunities his talent deserved with the Blues. It clearly affected his confidence, and uninspiring spells back with the Sky Blues and QPR have followed.
