Premier League giants chasing £12m-rated defender.
Manchester United and Liverpool could be set for a January transfer battle to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s £12m-rated centre-back Omer Toprak, according to the Daily Star.
The Turkish international has been in highly impressive form in the Bundesliga this season, showing himself to be one of the most solid defenders in the German top flight to attract interest from a host of top clubs.
United and Liverpool are said to be among the leading contenders to snap him up in the January transfer window, though Tottenham Hotspur have also been linked with an interest in securing his services.
United and Liverpool are certainly in need of defensive signings, with both teams looking suspect at the back based on performances so far this season.
The Red Devils spent heavily on attacking players over the summer but could now look to tighten up in defence, with some other big names also being linked with moves to Old Trafford in recent times.
Toprak looks like a player who could improve Louis van Gaal’s side, whilst also looking an improvement on Liverpool’s disappointing summer signing Dejan Lovren, who has not managed to replicate his fine form for Southampton in the Reds’ back four this term.
