The Seven Biggest Premier League Fools This Season Including Balotelli Shirt Swap, Man United Bird Poo Incident And Mourinho Handshake

Cock-ups from across the English top tier.

As always the Premier League has thrown up its fair share of gaffes, blunders and foolish behaviour so far in 2014/15 and here CaughtOffside picks out the seven biggest culprits.

7. Mario Balotelli

Liverpool suffered just one of what seems to be a growing number of humbling defeats when they faced Real Madrid in the Champions League, but new boy Balotelli upset even more Reds fans by choosing to swap his shirt with Los Blancos defender Pepe at half-time.

The controversy that surrounded this incident does seem a little overblown, but if the Italy international was playing better nobody would mind.

6. Richard Dunne

We do feel sorry for the QPR defender, but the own goal that the Irishman put past his own goalkeeper in the 3-2 loss to Brendan Rodgers’ side was the 11th for Dunne in his league career – more than any other player – making him the holder of a very unwanted record.

5. Ashley Young

It’s easy to forget that when Louis van Gaal first arrived as manager at Manchester United he used a 5-3-2 formation with Young utilised as a wing-back, but on the opening day of the season in a 2-1 defeat to Swansea City the Englishman was unfortunate enough to have a bird poo in his mouth.

This served as something of a metaphor for his form and the 29-year-old has since been duly dropped.

4. Morgan Amalfitano and Diafra Sakho

It has been a renaissance campaign for West Ham United and new signings Amalfitano and Sakho have played a big part in that, but during the shock 2-1 victory over Manchester City the duo committed a silly mistake after choosing to celebrate a Hammers goal with the travelling Citizens fans.

3. Sandro

After falling down the pecking order at Tottenham Hotspur the midfielder was given a lifeline at Loftus Road by former boss Harry Redknapp, but the 66-year-old was less than impressed when Sandro injured himself in training by sliding on the ground celebrating a goal.

2. Jose Mourinho

The supposed master of mind games might have picked the wrong opponent when the Chelsea manager chose to try and shake hands with Aston Villa assistant and well renowned hard-man Roy Keane before the final whistle had been blown.

Keane refused and duly refrained from making eye contact with the Portuguese coach, but later admitted he was lucky not to get punched.

1. Rio Ferdinand

A third player from Redknapp’s side now – which hardly shines a positive light on the club – and something of an unusual precedent set by the FA after serving a three-match ban to the 35-year-old after Ferdinand used the word ‘sket’ on Twitter.

A weird response, but Ferdinand should have known better.
