They had to wait until well into the second half before Alexis Sanchez gave the Gunners the lead, but Calum Chambers grabbed a second soon after to put things beyond the Clarets and the Chilean rounded things off late on.

Here’s how the home side rated.

1. Wojciech Szczesny – 6

Barely tested by a weak opposition and would be glad of more clean-sheets like this.

21. Calum Chambers – 8

Got forward brilliantly and put a great cross in for Sanchez’s opener before netting his first goal for the club himself.

4. Per Mertesacker – 5

Looked shaky once more against a pacey attack spearheaded by Danny Ings and against a better side the German would have been punished.

18. Nacho Monreal – 6

A more mobile presence than Mertesacker and had little trouble tracking Ings and Marvin Sordell.

3. Kieran Gibbs – 6

With nothing really to worry about in defence the left-back was given free reign to push forward and looked dangerous from the flank.

20. Mathieu Flamini – 5

A little wasted really in defensive midfield as his side dominated and Flamini looked a somewhat lost as a result.

8. Mikel Arteta (Ramsey, 63′) – 6

Was always available to receive the ball, but is much less of an influence going forward than he used to be.

15. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Walcott, 80′) – 7

Dangerous down the right flank the only thing that was really missing from the England international’s game was a clinical final ball.

19. Santi Cazorla – 6

Should have gotten on the scoresheet twice during the game, but the Spaniard was creative and looked good from set pieces.

17. Alexis Sanchez – 8

Another fine performance from the 25-year-old who was knocking at the door all game before bagging a late brace for the hosts.

23. Danny Welbeck (Podolski, 80′) – 5

Not the best of games for the forward, although he had a couple of decent chances before being taken off.

Substitutions:

16. Aaron Ramsey – 6

Didn’t influence much going forward, but brought more energy to the field after replacing Arteta.

14. Theo Walcott – 6

Made his long awaited return from injury and looked as sharp as ever, blazing down the flank to set up Lukas Podolski.

9. Lukas Podolski – 7

On this showing the Germany international should be playing more often and he was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet late on.

Manager – Arsene Wenger – 6

A decent display from his side although starting with Arteta and Flamini seemed unnecessarily defensive and it took too long to get the breakthrough.
