GK: Simon Mignolet – 6/10
Did not fill his defenders will any confidence, frequently flapping at crosses. However, his toes made a superb save to keep out Remy Cabella late on.
RB: Glen Johnson – 6/10
Made a superb headed goal-line clearance in the first half, but his general play was pretty bad.
LB: Alberto Moreno – 4/10
Gifted the ball to Ayoze Perez, who broke the deadlock seconds later. The former Sevilla left-back made another horrible error, which went unpunished thanks to Mignolet’s save.
CB: Dejan Lovren – 6/10
Newcastle had two penalty shouts against Lovren. Both were, corrected, rejected. He did ok, but was booked for a stupid tackle on Cabella in the dying seconds.
CB: Martin Skrtel – 7/10
Made more clearances – 10 – than any other Reds player.
CM: Steven Gerrard – 6/10
At times, it seemed that Liverpool were just waiting for Gerrard to produce some captain’s magic to save them. Unfortunately, he is now 34 and way past his best.
CM: Joe Allen – 5/10
A truly forgettable performance. The Welshman was impressively anonymous.
AM: Raheem Sterling – 5/10
No threat whatsoever. Perhaps he was tired?
AM: Jordan Henderson – 6/10
Worked hard, but produced very little in an attacking sense.
AM: Philippe Coutinho – 7/10
The Brazilian was sharp and lively. Shame his teammates failed to support him!
ST: Mario Balotelli – 5/10
Looked disinterested throughout the second half.
