There’s no doubt Gerrard has been one of the best players in the Premier League for many years, but at 34 years of age he looks past his best and these six players would surely be better business:

1) Sami Khedira (Real Madrid)

Available on a free transfer next summer, Sami Khedira is being pursued by the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United and would make a great signing for City too.

2) Alex Song (Barcelona)

Currently impressing on loan at West Ham United, Alex Song will surely be available next summer after failing to break into the Barcelona first-team since leaving Arsenal. City are among the teams watching him, along with Liverpool.

3) Fredy Guarin (Inter Milan)

A top class midfielder, Fredy Guarin of Inter Milan has been in superb form in Serie A down the years, and City should rival the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea for his signature.

4) Ross Barkley (Everton)

One of the most promising young players in England, Everton’s Ross Barkley could be the next Steven Gerrard and should be a priority for City over the Liverpool veteran, even if he would cost near £50m.

5) Paul Pogba (Juventus)

The ideal long-term replacement for Yaya Toure, Juventus starlet Paul Pogba has been linked with City several times and would be well worth whatever money he’d cost as he can surely go on to become one of the best in the world for a long time.

6) Arturo Vidal (Juventus)

Another world class midfielder at Juventus who has attracted plenty of recent attention, Arturo Vidal would definitely be a better signing for City than Steven Gerrard at the moment.
