Here is a closer look at the XI and the merits, or otherwise, of each player.
David de Gea: £18.9m
Started his Old Trafford career a little shakily but is arguably now one of the best keepers in the Premier League.
Luke Shaw: £27.5m
Huge fee to pay for the then 18 year old and as yet he hasn’t done enough to suggest he was worth the outlay.
Chris Smalling: £10m
A weak link in the Man United side, wherever he is played, silly booking led to his involvement in the game being swiftly halted.
Marcos Rojo: £16m
The price is a fair one for a player of Rojo’s obvious ability, still to prove himself at Premier League level.
Luis Antonio Valencia: £16m
One of a host of right-back options available to Louis van Gaal and much like Smalling or Rafael the Ecuadorian isn’t consistent enough in the role.
Daley Blind: £13.8m
Versatile midfielder will prove to be a real bargain.
Marouane Fellaini: £27.5m
One decent performance and people have magically forgotten about his poor displays of last term. David Moyes massively overpaid for the Belgian.
Adnan Januzaj: Free
Winger with great potential and a very bankable asset who could well decide his long term future is better served elsewhere.
Wayne Rooney: £20m
Has been a great servant for the club and has arguably never received the plaudits he richly deserves.
Angel di Maria: £59.7m
Argentine has shown tantalizing glimpses of what he is capable of, expect more to follow.
Robin Van Persie: £24m
Big price for a player of advancing years, and with well documented injury concerns, but has scored regularly since moving to Old Trafford.
