Steven Gerrard could be set to swap England for the USA – with the New York Cosmos a potential destination for the Liverpool captain next summer, The Metro reports.

Gerrard’s contract with the Merseyside outfit expires at the end of this season, with the 34-year-old having recently admitted that he could leave The Reds if the club do not offer him a new deal.

Brendan Rodgers, the Liverpool manager, says his determination to extend Steven Gerrard’s contract is solely down to the player’s talent and nothing to do with sentimentality, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Rodgers wants Gerrard to remain beyond this season – the captain’s contract expires in July – and has made his feeling known to the Anfield hierarchy.

Jordan Henderson was left to bemoan Liverpool’s lack of creativity after they crashed to a 1-0 defeat at Newcastle United, the Liverpool Echo reports.

The Reds dominated possession in the North East but rarely tested home keeper Tim Krul. It’s the first time they have failed to score in successive Premier League matches since April 2013.

The Reds face competition from Tottenham to sign Bayern Munich star Xherdan Shaqiri, according to the Daily Mirror.

The Swiss international has failed to nail down a regular starting spot at the Allianz Arena and was linked with a switch to Merseyside in the summer.

Brendan Rodgers is gobsmacked by Luis Suarez being elbowed from the Ballon D’Or hit list of elite superstars, the Daily Star reports.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale are all included by the FIFA panel but the former Liverpool striker, who scored 31 goals as his old team finished runners-up?to?champions Manchester City, has been omitted from the list of 23 names.
