Realistically for Liverpool, they can’t currently attract a big name such as Pep Guardiola or Carlo Ancelotti, but there are some more realistic options out there that could turn things around for the club as they continue to look in freefall after suffering a lengthy hangover from last season’s efforts.

Although the Northern Irishman came closer than anyone to guiding Liverpool to a long-awaited Premier League title last season, his momentum and influence may be wearing off, so would these five managers be better bets at Anfield?

1) Jurgen Klopp (Borussia Dortmund)

A two-time Bundesliga champion and Champions League final runner-up with Borussia Dortmund, Jurgen Klopp has become regarded as one of the finest coaches in the game at the moment, and would surely be a popular choice to come in at Liverpool if Rodgers were to be replaced, with his attacking style of play sure to be a hit at almost any top European club.

2) Diego Simeone (Atletico Madrid)

A proven winner with Atletico Madrid, Diego Simeone has worked miracles with the small La Liga club, guiding them to the title last season and to the Champions League final with some superbly spirited fighting displays to see off their more big-name rivals and their expensively-assembled sides.

3) Rafael Benitez (Napoli)

Although not always the most popular man in the world during his first spell with Liverpool – and particularly since returning to England for a brief stint with rivals Chelsea – how many fans would take Rafa back now? The Spaniard has won trophies almost everywhere he’s been and could be a good upgrade on Rodgers at this moment in time.

4) Manuel Pellegrini (Manchester City)

A far out option perhaps, but there has been some speculation that Manuel Pellegrini’s job at Manchester City could be under threat after some disappointing recent form. Still, the Chilean did some fine work in La Liga with the likes of Malaga and Villarreal, before guiding City to the Premier League title and League Cup in his first season in charge last year, all while playing stylish attacking football.

5) Unai Emery (Sevilla)

A superb up-and-coming young manager, Unai Emery won the Europa League with Sevilla last season and has them flying high in La Liga this season, just two points behind league leaders Real Madrid with seven wins from their opening ten games, despite being forced to sell some big-name players such as Ivan Rakitic and Alberto Moreno during the summer transfer window.
