6. Jamie Carragher – seven own goals

Hours per own goal – 103

Is considered a club legend at Anfield, but the centre-back turned pundit did have a nasty habit of putting the ball past his own goalkeeper – including one particularly bad day against Manchester United when he did it twice.

5. Frank Sinclair – six own goals

Hours per own goal – 67

Another who put two past his own ‘keeper in the same game now whilst playing for Leicester City and unfortunately for Sinclair that will be the thing he is primarily remembered for by many.

4. Wes Brown – six own goals

Hours per own goal – 63

The strike that Brown popped into his own net for Sunderland against Crystal Palace on Monday was the sixth in his league career and takes the defender up to fifth on the list.

3. Phil Jagielka – six own goals

Hours per own goal – 61

Just edging ahead though is the Everton captain who luckily for him also chips in with his fair share at the right end to take the attention off his embarrassment somewhat.

2. Richard Dunne – 10 own goals

Hours per own goal – 59

Although he doesn’t quite take the top spot on this unwanted list, there is every chance that the Hoops veteran could make it a double before this season is out as Dunne and own goals seem to come hand in hand.

1. Martin Skrtel – six own goals

Hours per own goal – 47

Yet top of the pile is another Reds star and a record he achieved primarily with the four strikes he put past Simon Mignolet in 2013/14  and Skrtel is officially the most prolific own goal scorer in the league’s history.
