Manchester United Injury Crisis – The Seven Inexperienced Defenders Available To Louis Van Gaal For The Weekend

The Red Devils may have to field Michael Carrick at centre-back

Over recent weeks a build up of injuries to players in Manchester United’s back line has now left the club in crisis.

Following Sunday’s loss to Manchester City, Marcos Rojo now joins Rafael, Phil Jones, and Jonny Evans in keeping the physio’s busy.

That is potentially the club’s first choice back four all out of action. Jesse Lingard and Ashley Young are also in the treatment room, both of whom have played at wing-back this season.

Here is a list of the seven players now available to manager Louis van Gaal for the match against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Tyler Blackett, 20-years-old

The youngster has played far more this season than anyone would have expected before the campaign began.

Injuries to Jones, Evans and Rojo means he is the most experienced specialist centre-back left.

Luke Shaw, 19-years-old

The left-back is now the most seasoned defender left in terms of Premier League appearances.

However, his form so far this season has not been great.

Paddy McNair, 19-years-old

The Northern Irishman was plucked from the youth ranks to make his debut in the Red Devils’ 2-1 win over West Ham United in September.

He was praised for his performance in that game, as well as in the game against Everton a week later.

Tom Thorpe, 21-years-old

The England Under 21’s player made his debut in the same game against West Ham as McNair, coming on as a injury time substitute. He could be getting more game time now.

Marnick Vermijl, 22-years-old

The Belgian right-back made an appearance in the League Cup way back in September 2012, but had to wait until the embarrassing loss to MK Dons this season before he played again.

Saidy Janko, 19-years-old

One of David Moyes’ signings in his first and only summer as United manager, Janko has only played in that same MK Dons game as Vermijl.

He did win the Reserves Player of the Year award last season.

Reece James, 20-years-old

Also appearing in the infamous loss to the Dons this season, James may be held back by playing in the same position as Shaw.
