The fan favourite risked upsetting Blues fans with comments made last weekend but has wisely backtracked on his statements ahead of Chelsea’s encounter with Maribor on Wednesday evening.

“Maybe I went a little bit too far with the fans. But I see myself in the stands, watching Chelsea and I want to play, I want to help.

“I love my job. I am lucky to do it at the club I like so much and feel such a connection with, and maybe that makes me lead the club with a different emotion.

Mourinho also added that he would be missing his daughter Matilde’s 18th birthday to lead his side out against Maribor.

“I try to enjoy life but yesterday was my daughters’ 18th birthday – which is a once in a lifetime experience and I am here, not with my family,” he said.
