Liverpool lost to Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Tuesday evening, but with a ‘weakened’ side, the 1-0 defeat was respectable, especially considering the fact that most fans were predicting a cricket score before kick off.

Here’s four players who’ve endured miserable seasons, but proved that might just have an Anfield future after all.

Simon Mignolet

Mignolet’s come under as much pressure as anybody this season, but he proved versus the Champions League holders that he’s an excellent shot stopper. He dealt with Cristiano Ronaldo’s fizzing long shots superbly, and made an excellent save from James Rodriguez early on too. In all, real had 26 efforts on goal, but only one of those went past the Belgian. Well played.

Kolo Toure

A figure of fun for many, Toure rolled back the years to show why at one point he was once considered one of the Premier League’s finest defenders. He didn’t let the world’s best player Cristiano Ronaldo get the better of him, and he made a number of telling blocks, too. He’ll be desperately unlucky to lose his place at the weekend – especially with Dejan Lovren performing so miserably.

Lucas Leiva

Lucas showed that he’s a far more natural holding midfielder than Steven Gerrard. He provided countless tackles and interceptions in the centre of the park, and provided an excellent platform for the side. His role in protecting the defence improved Liverpool tenfold.

Fabio Borini

Borini didn’t score a goal or create any chances, but his work-rate far exceeded anything Mario Balotelli has shown this season. The young Italian fought tooth and nail for the Liverpool cause, which was even more admirable considering the Reds tried desperately to sell him in the summer. Most fans would have him starting ahead of the maverick Balotelli for now.
