Manchester United boss Louis Van Gaal has said that he will not splash the cash needlessly on defenders during the January transfer market as he would rather give rookies Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair further chances to impress, according to the Daily Mirror.

The Manchester United boss is keen to strengthen his backline, but will only splash out in the next transfer window in the unlikely event that top target Borussia Dortmund skipper Mats Hummels becomes available.
Van Gaal is wary of splaying unnecessarily on players in the new year only to replace them in the summer.
This could potentially rule out any moves when the transfer window opens for the likes of Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar or Porto’s Bruno Martins Indi.
The manager still has a substantial transfer war chest to call upon despite spending over £150m over the summer.
However, he would rather keep most of it until the end of the campaign when he will have a better chance at signing the type of player he really wants.
