Here is who the 34-year-old has gone for.

GK – Pepe Reina

May have been considered surplus to requirements by current manager Brendan Rodgers, but three successive Premier League Golden Glove awards cannot be sniffed at.

RB – Glen Johnson

When Gerrard named his best XI a little over a month ago he chose Champions League winner Steve Finnan at right-back, so perhaps current teammate Johnson has had a word since then.

CB – Jamie Carragher

Little surprise here with the Sky Sports pundit and the midfielder making up a real core of local talent in the Merseysiders’ XI for over a decade.

CB – Sami Hyypia

Spent 10 years with the club and during that time helped them to numerous trophy successes and is considered a true legend at Anfield.

LB – John Arne Riise

A left-back with a devastating left boot who was in the team when they recorded their famous Champions League victory back in 2005.

CM – Javier Mascherano

Surprisingly Gerrard has left Dietmar Hamann out of the side in favour of this Argentine, who although clearly talented has perhaps enjoyed his best form since joining FC Barcelona.

CM – Xabi Alonso

Still thought of as one of the best midfielders ever seen in the English top tier, Alonso spent five years with the club before being snapped up by Real Madrid in 2009.

CM – Steven Gerrard

It would seem foolish not to include himself with Gerrard having been a stalwart in the side ever since progressing from the academy back in 1997.

ST – Fernando Torres

May be considered a slop since becoming Chelsea’s most expensive player ever at £50m, but whilst on Merseyside this Spaniard was a force to be reckoned with.

ST – Robbie Fowler

Named by Gerrard ahead of fellow Englishman Michael Owen, this striker was a key figure at the club when the now skipper was first making a name for himself.

ST – Luis Suarez

Completing an impressive trio of attackers is a man who was banned for biting an opponent, but also scored an astonishing 31 league goals in 33 games to earn the PFA Player of the Year award last season.
