As such Arsene Wenger has been linked to a number of players in the January transfer window. The majority of which are defenders as they currently have a crisis at the back, with only one fit specialist centre-back.

Here are the their top five targets for the next transfer window…

5) Winston Reid, West Ham

The New Zealander has been linked by the Express. The centre-back would be a great signing to bolster the Gunners’ back line.

With Laurent Koscielny potentially out for a long time, Wenger could be on the lookout for a defender sooner rather than later.

4) Fabian Schar, FC Basel

Another centre-back to help with the injury problems, Schar has been linked by the Metro.

He could possibly move to the Emirates Stadium for £10 million and at 22-years-old would be a long term option for the Gunners.

3) Xherdan Shaqiri, Bayern Munich

Arsenal are looking to rival both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur for the signing of the Swiss international, reports the Daily Star.

The 2014 World Cup star has been finding it difficult to get in to the Bayern first team, and could be looking for a move away. An attacking midfielder, he would be an addition to an already strong part of the pitch for the North London club.

2) Gerard Pique, FC Barcelona

The Barcelona centre-back has been left out of the team for the Catalan club’s last two games, and could be on the way out according to the Daily Mail.

The Gunners are thought to be interested due to their defensive injuries.

1) Sami Khedira, Real Madrid

The World Cup winner could be on his way to North London, according to the Express.

The Gunners were put off a move in the summer due to his wage demands, but he thought to have now dropped them to force the transfer.

The German would be perfect to add some steel to Wenger’s midfield.
