Manager Brendan Rodgers fielded what was considered an under-strength side in the Spanish capital, but here are five supposedly second string players who should be given a chance against Chelsea on Saturday after their performances.

Emre Can

Signed from Bayer Leverkusen over the summer for £10m this 20-year-old had looked shaky up until the Madrid clash and although perhaps isn’t ready for a constant place in the starting XI, showed he is a useful addition as a box-to-box midfielder.

Lucas Leiva

With captain Steven Gerrard struggling for form perhaps it is time for a new central midfield partner for Jordan Henderson and although Lucas doesn’t have the passing capabilities of his skipper, is a better prospect in a holding role.

Javi Manquillo

Has hardly shone since completing a loan switch from Atletico Madrid over the summer, but with Jon Flanagan injured and Glen Johnson looking more and more careless at right-back, Rodgers would do well to persist with this youngster.

Lazar Markovic

Another summer addition now and Markovic cost a whopping £20m from Benfica and yet has failed to impress as yet, although up against Los Blancos the Serbia international showed glimpses of what he is capable of and could be an exciting addition on the flanks.

Kolo Toure

Last term this centre-back was thought of as an utter liability, but with Dejan Lovren failing to impress since a £20m switch from Southampton and Mamdou Sakho injured, Toure could be the ideal partner for Martin Skrtel after doing so well against Cristiano Ronaldo.
