Five Reasons Why Brendan Rodgers Will Never Be Chelsea Manager

Five reasons why the Anfield boss won’t ever ‘do a Torres’.

Being a former student of Jose Mourinho, and a practitioner of flowing progressive football, there are a lot of factors that could point towards Brendan Rodgers one day taking over from the Special One when he eventually steps down for good at Stamford Bridge. However, there are also several reasons why it seems unlikely that he would take the Stamford Bridge hot set, and they are as follows…

5. The Josh McEachran Loan

Whilst in charge at Swansea, Rodgers used his contacts with the Blues to bag the teenager on a season long loan. Knowing that the highly-rated youngster would face an un-winnable battle to get some game time, so he brought him to the Liberty Stadium to oversea his development.

However, things quickly went sour as McEachran made just one solitary appearance in South Wales. Asked what he learned in south Wales, McEachran said: “Nothing.” Questioned on his opinion of Rodgers, he added: “I’ll pass on that. It was one of those things in life which just didn’t work out.”

4. “I’m trying to build my career and not destroy it”

Again, whilst at Swansea in 2012, he was tipped as a potential successor to Andre Villas Boas, who had just been sacked. His brand of attractive football had some some of the Stamford Bridge chiefs to seriously consider him as their next manager.

But when asked about a potential return to Chelsea, Rodgers replied: “If any of our fans are wondering about me and Chelsea, they need not panic. I am trying to build my career and not destroy it.” He may have only been half joking, but Chelsea took it as a show if disrespect and it did not go down well at all.

3. Daniel Sturridge

Undoubtedly the best piece of business that Rodgers has done at Anfield is bring the England international to the club in a £12m deal from Chelsea. Sturridge has scored an incredible 36 goals in 52 appearances at Anfield, making his fee a bargain, but there are some at Stamford Bridge who believe Rodgers has taken too much credit for the deal.

Some have suggested that Rodgers was reluctant to sanction a permanent deal in 2012, and had to be pushed to do so during the January window. But whatever the truth is, the Sturridge deal has been embarrassing for Chelsea, but an unmitigated success for Rodgers.

2. The Victor Moses Situation

Similar to the deal with McEachran, the Victor Moses move may well prove to be the final loan deal between Chelsea, Liverpool and Rodgers for some time. Chelsea don’t loan their players to just anyone, and want their stars to get as much game time as possible.

However, Moses made just nine appearance for the club and the move seemed to be a huge waste of time. Rodgers wanted Ryan Bertrand on loan this summer, but Chelsea instead sent him to Southampton where he has featured in all ten of their games so far.

1. The ‘smaller’ teams

Both Rodgers and Mourinho have often slipped up against some of the league’s lesser teams, and when they play each other they are often accused of parking two minibuses.

The Blues will want their next manager to have no problem sweeping these sides away, not succumbing to them.
