Manchester United have opened talks with Monaco about signing 22-year-old left-back Layvin Kurzawa – also a target for Chelsea – for £12m in January, according to the Daily Star.

The Red Devils have been linked with a host of new defenders in the January transfer window but a move for Real Madrid left-back Fabio Coentrao is off fail with the Spanish side’s interest in Bayern Munich star David Alaba on ice due to injury.

Nemanja Vidic could be in line for a sensational return to Manchester United after failing to impress at Inter Milan, according to the Daily Express.

Despite enjoying much success during his 300 appearances for the Red Devils, Vidic has failed to hit the same heights in Italy, taking to the pitch just eight times under Walter Mazzarri.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is planning to recall Nani to Old Trafford in January after the winger’s excellent form for Sporting Lisbon, the Daily Star reports.

The Portuguese international has been in excellent form and the Dutch boss is eager to bring him back to the club.

Striker Robin van Persie has said he was surprised by Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure from Manchester United and says he is not satisfied with his performances under new manager Louis van Gaal, the Guardian reports.

In September, Van Persie’s former United team-mate Rio Ferdinand stated Ferguson’s decision to retire after 27 years at Old Trafford “took the wind out of everyone’s sails” but “the person it hit more than anyone was Robin”.

Gerard Pique is set to snub a return to Manchester United to seal a switch to Chelsea in the January transfer window, according to the Metro.

Pique, who has fallen out of favour at Barcelona, had been lined up by United for a big money return to Old Trafford in the new year.
