Here are the top ten most injury prone players ever:

10) Alexandre Pato

The Brazilian was seemingly destined for great things in the footballing world, with a move to AC Milan the first step in an extremely promising career.

He suffered regularly with a number of injuries while in Serie A however, and was eventually shipped back home to Brazil.

9) Michael Essien

After a relatively injury free career, the former Chelsea man picked up his first ACL injury in 2008. He never fully recovered after that, and continued to suffer from a number of issues including a second ACL injury in 2011.

8) Kieran Gibbs

Gibbs could easily have become the England national left-back and one of the best full-backs in the Premier League if it wasn’t for his constant injury problems.

He has suffered a number of nasty injuries and breaks, including a broken metatarsal which forced him to miss an entire season in 2009/10.

7) Andy Carroll

Carroll seems to have been perpetually injured, recovering only long enough to secure inflated transfers. He suffered a number of injuries following his record move to Liverpool, and since moving on to West Ham has been unable to string more than a handful of games together.

6) Theo Walcott

Another Arsenal star, Walcott has had a terrible time with injuries recently. An ACL tear against Spurs in January meant he missed not only the World Cup this summer, but also the Gunners ending their lengthy trophy drought in the FA Cup against Hull.

His progress before then had been very stop-start, with the England international never really able to get a decent run of games due to a number of niggling injuries.

5) Ibrahim Afellay

When he joined Barcelona in 2011 Afellay looked destined for great things. He was injured during pre-season with the La Liga club however, and after finally making his return he was hit with an ACL injury.

His record saw him pushed out the door on loan to Schalke 04, but his injuries continued with the Bundesliga club and he has never reached the heights that were expected of him.

4) Jonathan Woodgate

The fact that Real Madrid signed him knowing full well that he was injured at the time shows exactly how much potential Woodgate possessed. He made just nine appearances in two seasons for Real Madrid, and eventually moved to Tottenham. While at Spurs he suffered a groin injury which kept him out for a massive 17 months; after finally recovering he picked up yet another injury in his very first game back.

3) Stuart Holden

After a horror tackle from Manchester United defender Jonny Evans in 2010, Holden was out for six months with a fractured femur and a nasty wound. His initial injury led to a number of others over the next few years, including a nasty ACL tear. His career has been effectively ended following Evans’ tackle.

2) Alejandro Faurlin

The anterior cruciate ligament injury is one of the worst in football, with careers ended after suffering such horrendous trauma. Faurlin has suffered three ACL tears since 2012, effectively side-lining him for two full years.

1) Abou Diaby

With over 40 separate injuries during his time at Arsenal, Abou Diaby has to be one of, if not the most broken player in history. Most would have retired or been let go years ago, but the Frenchman is still trying to make it at Arsenal.
