Five players that would help Liverpool re-enter the title race once again.

Despite some heavy investment over the summer, things haven’t gone according to plan at Liverpool so far this season. Injuries to key players and loss of form within others has held Brendan Rodgers back and it hasn’t taken long for the Anfield faithful to get on his back. However, with January comes salvation, and below are five players that could help the club stop thew rot and turn their ailing form around.

5. Victor Valdes

The proposed move for Valdes is verging on the border of becoming a full blown saga as nobody knows what his next move will be. Rumoured to be closing in on a move to Manchester United, but for the time being he is still very much a free agent. Despite having been out of action for the past few months he would still be an improvement on Simon Mignolet on current form.

4. Ron Vlaar – Aston Villa

The Villa defender is clearly the best of a bad bunch, and with his contract expiring at the end of the season he will be up for grabs very soon. Villa want to resist all comers for his signature in the new year, but spending big sums hasn’t bothered the club up to this point, and should they make a tempting offer around the £12m mark they would have a defensive rock that is comfortable with the ball at his feet to settle into the middle and provide some much needed leadership back there.

3. Yohan Cabaye – Paris Saint Germain

Since Cabaye’s return to France his career has stalled somewhat. However, he could find himself en route to Anfield at some point if reports in the Daily Mirror are to be believed. The Reds need a midfield string puller now that Steven Gerrard’s powers are on the decline, and though Jordan Henderson has performed admirably, Cabaye would be a step up in terms of sitting deep and threading passes through the eye of a needle.

2. Jay Rodriguez – Southampton

The Saints star was well and truly on the up before his injury last term, and missed out on a trip to Brazil because of it. Having recently discovered his scoring touch, his versatility of being able to play up front or just behind the strikers makes him an adaptable and valuable commodity. One that Brendan Rodgers could surely find use for.

1. Jackson Martinez – Porto

With the Reds feeling particularly goal shy at the moment, a new striker to compensate for Daniel Sturridge’s injury remains a high priority. The Colombian international has been a target for many top clubs across Europe for the past two seasons now, and is more suited to what Liverpool need. He will come in a similar mould to Luis Suarez and will guarantee more movement than Mario Balotelli. However, he will come at a cost, and could cost Rodgers up to £30m for his services.
