Ranking The 8 Worst Premier League Summer Transfers: Liverpool Flops Dominate, While Man United’s £27m Defender Also Features

There were some pretty big flops signed in the summer…

Several summer signings have been rightly lauded so far this season. Alexis Sanchez for Arsenal, Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas for Chelsea, and almost all of Southampton’s business has been seen as brilliant.

However, that is not the case with all the transfers that were made before the season got going. Several big money signings have gone wrong, most notably at Liverpool.

Here are the worst eight so far…

8) Lazar Markovic, Liverpool, £20 million

Most £20 million signings are expected to hit the ground running. However, after a couple of appearances for the Reds, it is already looking like it will take some time for the Serb’s game to adapt to the Premier League. However, at 20-years-old he has time on his side to prove the critics wrong.

7) Tom Ince, Hull City, Free

The  youngster turned claimed he down Inter Milan for the delights of Hull, but may live to regret it. He has started terribly at the North East club, already being farmed out on loan to Nottingham Forest.

6) Adam Lallana, Liverpool, £25 million

The £25 million price tag would hang over most players, but the England international has made it worse by being part of an underachieving Liverpool side. He will need to improve soon if he doesn’t want the fans to get on his back.

5) Luke Shaw, Manchester United, £27 million

The 19-year-old arrived from Southampton in the summer, and has since been accused of being unfit. The left-back has picked up recently, but will need to improve even more to justify his transfer fee.

4) Rio Ferdinand, QPR, Free

The ex England captain was meant to create a solid defensive partnership alongside Steven Caulker. However he hasn’t performed to his old standards, and his recent ban for twitter comments has happened to coincide with better performances from QPR. His massive wages mean this transfer isn’t as ‘free’ as you would expect.

3) Brown Ideye, West Brom, £10 million

The Nigerian became the club’s record signing in the summer, but is yet to impress. He hasn’t even been able to get in to a solidly performing West Brom side. Manager Alan Irvine has recently admitted to buying him on the basis of a dvd he’d watched.

2) Mario Balotelli, Liverpool, £16 million

The striker has had a terrible start to his Liverpool career. Only two goals so far and with the fans on his back already, the Italian could be leaving the club as early as January.

1) Dejan Lovren, Liverpool, £20 million

The former Southampton centre-back has not looked at all up to speed with being in a Champions League side. Unable to play either with the ball or without it at the moment, he could be said to be a failure already.
