Not many British managers have made the move to manage outside of the UK, and the few that have have had mixed fortunes. These are five of the most successful.

5) Steve McLaren

Steve McLaren rebuilt his reputation in Dutch football after his awful tenure as England manager. He took FC Twente to the Eredivisie title in 2010, but then went on struggle at Wolfsburg a year later. He returned to the Dutch team but again left a year later. Now at Derby, he seems to have found the right club as he looks to lead them to the Premier League. Despite all this, he will always be remembered for the bizarre interview where he spoke in a Dutch accent during his time in Holland.

4) Terry Venables

Another former England manager, but this time it was after his sojourn abroad. Venables was appointed Barcelona manager on the recommendation of Sir Bobby Robson, and went on to win La Liga in his first year as boss. He then lost in the European Cup final in the following season, and lost the league by a point in his final campaign before being sacked. He also managed Australia for a while, but resigned after failing to take them to World Cup 98.

3) Roy Hodgson

The current national team boss is very widely travelled. He started his career in Sweden, before having spells managing in Switzerland, Italy, Finland, Norway, and the United Arab Emirates. Highlights outside of Britain included managing Inter Milan, and taking Switzerland to 3rd in the international rankings.

2) John Toshack

The Welshman is a former boss of Moyes’ Real Sociedad, and also managed Real Madrid in two spells. He won the Copa Del Rey with Sociedad, and the league with Real Madrid. He has also managed in Turkey and France among other nations.

1) Sir Bobby Robson

Possibly the most successful British manager abroad, Sir Bobby Robson managed successive league titles at PSV Eindhoven, and Porto. He then went on to Barcelona, where he won the Copa del Rey and Cup Winner’s Cup in his first season, but was still sacked. He goes down as one of the all-time greats, and is much loved by all English supporters.
