Five Possible Arsenal Replacements For Lukas Podolski, Including Schalke Pair And The Emirates’ Forgotten Man

Which players could Arsene Wenger target in January to replace the outbound German attacker?

According to rumours, including a Guardian story which quotes the German striker, Lukas Podolski is on his way out of the Emirates, and the question is just whether it will be in January or in the summer. Either way, injuries mean Arsenal are already short of players in Podolski’s position, and will need to replace him in January. Here are five realistic targets for Arsene Wenger to look at in the next window.

How Arsenal Can Become Challengers

5) Pedro – Barcelona

The Spanish winger has been pushed down the pecking order by Luis Suarez’s arrival at Arsenal, and there have been reports in the last few weeks that he could hand in a transfer request to force a move. He’s technically good enough for Wenger, proven at the top level, and even better, he will likely be available relatively cheaply.

4) Anderson Talisca – Benfica

Talisca is one of Europe’s hottest properties, and it will set Arsenal back some serious cash if they are to beat clubs like Chelsea and Liverpool to the lanky Brazilian striker’s signature. While a different sort of player to Podolski, the Benfica striker would add size to a desperately short Arsenal side.

3) Klaas-Jan Huntelaar – Schalke

The striker scores goals wherever he goes, and his height and aerial prowess would add a new dimension to Arsenal’s attacking play. At 31, he would only be a short term option, but could be kept on the bench as an impact sub for years to come. Spurs and Liverpool have also been linked, and his arrival would enable Sanchez or Welback to play from the left if needed.

2) Julian Draxler – Schalke

Huntelaar’s Schalke team-mate is an entirely different type of player to the target man, but like Podolski, he gives Wenger an option down the left. Draxler is another star being chased by Europe’s biggest clubs, but the capture of Alexis Sanchez last summer proved that Arsenal are big enough and rich enough to compete with the world’s biggest, if they choose to. He’s been heavily, heavily linked in the past.

1) Joel Campbell – Arsenal

What does Joel Campbell have to do to get an Arsenal start? He’s been with the Gunners since 2011, but only received an English work permit last summer. He went on loan last season, but is now back in the Arsenal squad and still has only played 37 minutes this season. The Costa Rican has great speed and technique, as we saw at the World Cup, and he will hope that Podolski’s departure will give him the break he’s waited so many years for.
