There have been a number of expensive flops in the past, with Fernando Torres and Andy Carroll two notable Premier League examples. There are of course the success stories as well, such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Aguero.

With this in mind, how have this summer’s big transfers done since their moves?

10) Romelu Lukaku, Everton – £28m – 6/10

The 21-year-old made his move to Merseyside permanent in the summer, smashing Everton’s transfer record in the process.

Lukaku has only scored four goals so far, but having to play with an injury for the majority of the season so far has held him back.

Improvements in his ability to hold the ball up and bring others in to the game show promise for the future.

9) Ander Herrera, Manchester United – £29m – 6/10

The Spaniard has played well for the Red Devils when he has been on the pitch, but injury has curtailed his United career so far.

The recent form of Marouane Fellaini has also meant that Herrera has found it hard to get back in the team.

If the 24-year-old manages to get past the big Belgian, then there is no reason why he can’t become a success at Old Trafford.

8) Luke Shaw, Manchester United – £27m – 4/10

The England international has been in poor form so far this season, being part of a Man Utd defence that has been leaking goals and losing their team games.

However, he played slightly better against Crystal Palace on the weekend and if he can build on that then maybe he can turn it around.

7) Diego Costa, Chelsea – £32m – 9/10

Costa has brought the Blues everything they had been missing. The 26-year-old has been in brilliant form, with 10 goals already.

6) Eliaquim Mangala, Manchester City – £32m – 3/10

City signed the Frenchman in the summer as a partner for skipper Vincent Kompany, but he has failed to live up to that so far.

Several mistakes have meant that Mangala is having to fight with Martin Demichelis for his position at the moment.

The defender is only 23-years-old though, and could improve in the future.

5) Alexis Sanchez, Arsenal – £35m – 9/10

The Chilean has been brilliant at the Emirates Stadium – he has kept a poorly performing Arsenal side in touch with the top four in the Premier League.

Sanchez has been playing so well in fact, that there has been some talk that if his teammates don’t sort it out then he may leave for greener pastures.

4) David Luiz, Paris Saint-Germain – £40m – 8/10

When Luiz was captain of a Brazil side that lost 7-1 to Germany in the 2014 World Cup people were laughing at this transfer.

However, since his arrival in Paris he seems to have got over that disappointment. The 27-year-old played well in PSG’s two big games so far against FC Barcelona and Marseille, but the nature of the French league means that it is difficult to tell if they were one offs.

You can only beat what is front of you though.

3) Angel di Maria, Manchester United – £59.7m – 8/10

The 26-year-old has played well since arriving at Old Trafford, and looks to be a good buy from the Red Devils.

The constant changes in formation seem to have affected him recently though, with no goals in his last four games, after scoring three times in his first four.

2) James Rodriguez, Real Madrid – £63m – 8/10

With nine goals and five assists so far it looks like the Colombian has continued his World Cup form in to his new club. He has fitted right in to one of the best midfields in the world, which is no mean feat.

1) Luis Suarez, FC Barcelona – £65m – 7/10

It is hard to tell how well the former Liverpool star is doing at the moment, as he was banned from football until the last three games.

Suarez’s start has been promising, with two assists from the bench in his last game turning the match around for Barca.

If the South American starts scoring them soon as well, then he should be able to replicate last season’s heroics at the Catalan club.
