The Brazilian starlet has exploded on the the scene in the Campeonato this season and as such has sparked a trail of interest all over Europe. Juventus have had a fright this week in learning that there is still some significant interest in his services from the Premier League. United once again lead the chase, but they are being matched by the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool. However, with links going back to the summer, Louis Van Gaal may have a better chance at snapping him up than the others do.

In dire need of a defensive colossus, Van Gaal is preparing himself to turn to Spain where he will move for Atletico Madrid’s Miranda. The veteran stopper may set them back £20m, but his considerable experience and reading of the game will make sure Unites are not so soft and vulnerable at the back anymore.

6. Nico Gaitan – Benfica

Van Gaal was taking a closer look at the Argentine international over the summer, but ditched his interest as soon as he learnt that Angel Di Maria was available. However, he is set to renew that interest in the new year and reports claim he has a £28m paycheque ready to back it up.

Rumours of discord in the Spanish capital have given rise to the speculation linking Bale with a return to the UK. The Welshman initially rejected the chance to head to Old Trafford in 2013, but if things really are as bad as being reported then suddenly that red shirt is looking more and more appealing.

4. Victor Valdes

What now appears to be a nailed on certainty after spending the past two weeks training with the team. However, he was originally being touted as competition for current number one David de Gea, though it’s looking more likely that he’ll be his replacement.

3. Ron Vlaar – Aston Villa

With just over six months left on his deal at Villa, Vlaar has become hot property after a successful World Cup. United could land him on a free next summer but considering their defensive issues they may layout the cash for him in the new year. But, will a player so injury prone be of any use?

2. Wesley Sneijder – Galatasaray

After what seems like a lifetime of interest, United finally seem to have him in their grasp as his agent confirmed this week that the player wants a move and Juventus dropping out of the race it all looks good to go to finally get him in a red shirt.

1. Aymeric Laporte – Athletic Bilbao

The young Frenchman is the apple of everybody’s eye this season, and despite some significant interest from Chelsea, it is United who are believed to be frontrunners for his signature – ever though he’s cost them around £30m.
