Borussia Dortmund tell Manchester United it will cost £47m to sign Mats Hummels

The 13-time Premier League champions may have encountered a problem in their pursuit of the Dortmund captain.

According to the Sun the Bundesliga outfit have told the Red Devils it will cost them a whopping £47m if they want to sign Hummels.

Manager Louis van Gaal has made defensive recruitment a priority in January and viewed the Germany international as the ideal purchase.

After being left on the bench for much of Barca’s matches this season under new head coach Luis Enrique, the defender was being heavily linked with a move away from the Nou Camp.

United were believed to be interested in re-signing Pique, with the 27-year-old having previously spent four years with the club between 2004 and 2008, but the Spaniard has quashed those rumours.

However, even if the 24-year-old’s problem is serious, the Telegraph reports that van Gaal will use backup ‘keeper Anders Lindegaard and isn’t tempted by signing free agent Valdes – who has been training with the club.
