The Red Devils spent heavily on new signings during the summer, bringing in the likes of Angel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao and Luke Shaw as van Gaal looks to rebuild after last season’s highly disappointing campaign under David Moyes.

United could keep bringing in new players, however, with work clearly still needed to get the club back to its best, with results still not quite up to scratch so far this season.

If reports are to be believed, these four Bundesliga-based stars could be heading to United in exciting deals this January:

1) Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

Despite reports that Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels would favour a move to Arsenal, Manchester United are known to be big fans of the £30m-rated German international, and will surely try again to sign him this January as van Gaal will prioritise a top quality addition to improve his side’s performances at the back.

2) Xherdan Shaqiri (Bayern Munich)

United are also supposedly the favourites to sign in-demand Bayern Munich winger Xherdan Shaqiri. The 23-year-old has not managed to become a regular at the Allianz Arena and has attracted plenty of interest, with the Red Devils now tipped to win the race for his signature, which could set them back around £18m.

3) Roberto Firmino (Hoffenheim)

United may also have won the race to sign highly-rated Hoffenheim starlet Roberto Firmino in a £20m move. The young Brazilian has been superb in the Bundesliga in recent times, playing in a variety of attacking midfield roles to good effect. The likes of Arsenal and Liverpool have also been tracking him in recent times.

4) Julian Draxler (Schalke)

Manchester United also want to beat Arsenal and other clubs to the signing of £37m-rated Schalke youngster Julian Draxler. The German international has long been regarded as one of the best up-and-coming talents in world football, and he could now make the move to Old Trafford to further his career and form a star-studded new-look attacking midfield for the Red Devils.
