Borussia Dortmund forward Marco Reus is one of the most sought after players in European football right now, with the German international’s dynamism and ability to score goals from wide positions making him a huge player for Jurgen Klopp at Signal Iduna Park.

He is expected to leave Dortmund next summer, however, on account of a clause in his contract at the club – so which of these five potential destinations would suit the former Borussia Monchengladbach man the best?

Real Madrid

Real Madrid have been strongly linked with a move for Reus, despite the fact that Carlo Ancelotti’s squad at the Bernabeu is stacked full of exciting attacking talent. The fact that Reus is more of a wide forward than an out-and-out leader of the line makes a move to Madrid less likely, however, due to the fact that James Rodriguez, Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo and Isco tend to have those roles sewn up under Ancelotti as Real look to claim back the La Liga title from rivals Atletico Madrid.

Arsenal

Arsenal have also been linked with a move for Reus, although the idea of him moving to the Emirates Stadium is, in our opinion, largely fanciful. Despite the fee for Reus being a knockdown one in terms of his overall ability, it would still be a huge outlay for Arsenal, and in an area where Arsene Wenger’s side are already very strong – they would be better of investing £28m into their defence and central midfield.

Chelsea

Chelsea have reportedly become favourites to land the signing of Reus due to the fact that they are willing to include winger Andre Schurrle in a part exchange deal, something that could be viewed extremely favourably by Klopp and Dortmund. The need for Reus is there, with neither Schurrle or Mo Salah having performed consistently enough to mean that a wide attacking berth is not up for grabs, and the signing of Reus would arguably be one that completes the most balanced squad in European football right now.

Bayern Munich

The nightmare scenario for Dortmund is that Reus follows in the footsteps of former teammates Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski by making the controversial move to German champions Bayern Munich and Pep Guardiola – who will have to consider replacing the ageing Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery in the wide positions at the Allianz Arena in the near future. There is, however, some confusion over whether the release clause applies to other German clubs.

Liverpool

Arguably it is Premier League side Liverpool who have the biggest need for Reus – but whether Brendan Rodgers’ underachieving side are able to persuade Reus that Anfield is the right destination for a player who will expect definite Champions League football and challenges for trophies remains to be seen. The underperformance of the likes of Mario Balotelli and Lazar Markovic in attack means that there is a clear place in the team for someone like Reus, however.
