In honour of that fact CaughtOffside has picked out a combined XI of the two nations, with some big names not making the cut.

GK – Manuel Neuer

Is widely considered to be the best goalkeeper in world football currently and Iker Casillas is no match for the Bayern Munich stopper.

RB – Cesar Azpilicueta

With Philipp Lahm having retired from international football we have given the right-back slot to Azpilicueta, despite the fact the Chelsea defender generally operates at left-back for his club.

CB – Sergio Ramos

Another Spaniard now and this Real Madrid enforcer has won everything possible with both club and country and is a real behemoth at the back for both as well.

CB – Mats Hummels

It was a close call between this Borussia Dortmund centre-back and Jerome Boateng, but in the end we think that Hummels just edges it.

LB – Jordi Alba

A fairly easy choice on the left side of defence with Schalke 04 central defender Benedikt Hoewdes often playing there for the Germans and FC Barcelona’s Alba is among the best in the world.

CM – Sergio Busquets

A tough choice in central midfield with Cesc Fabregas not making the cut as we opted for this defensive midfielder for what he brings in the holding role.

CM – Toni Kroos

It was a similarly difficult decision here with Madrid star Kroos edging into the team ahead of fellow countryman Bastian Schweinsteiger.

RM – David Silva

There is a plethora of attacking midfield talent on offer for both countries, but for sheer consistency we have included Manchester City playmaker Silva as our first pick.

CAM – Marco Reus

Next up is a Dortmund ace who cruelly missed the 2014 World Cup due to injury, but is undoubtedly one of the finest attackers in world football currently.

LM – Andres Iniesta

Completing the attacking midfield is the sublimely talented Iniesta, who even at 30-years-old is better than most players in the game.

ST – Thomas Muller

Amazingly there aren’t that many standout strikers for either nation and that is why we have opted for the versatile Muller in attack, with Diego Costa just missing out.
