The only senior players left who can play in the position are Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini, neither of whom have scored a goal yet this season. So, the 41-year-old could well be on the look out for a new striker in the January window.

Here are five that have already been on the Reds’ transfer list that could interest them…

Saido Berahino, West Brom

The 21-year-old has caught the eye of several major clubs this season with his goalscoring form. He is currently the highest scoring Englishman in the Premier League, netting seven in just eleven appearances. The Reds are supposed to be interested, but the Baggies’ chairman has warned off any suitors.

Andre-Pierre Gignac, Marseille

The 29-year-old could be available for as little as £11 million, and Liverpool could be willing to pay it.. This is a cheap price for someone who has scored ten goals already this season.

Gonzalo Higuain, Napoli

World renowned for his ability with a football, the Argentine is one of the best strikers available. Liverpool are meant to be following the player, and may have made a £31.2 million bid already.

Jackson Martinez, Porto

The powerful Colombian has been linked to many clubs over the last twelve months, and now it is Liverpool’s turn. A massive £30 million offer is supposed to be on the table, and he would certainly bring goals to the side having scored 72 times in 107 games for the Portuguese club.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Schalke

At 31-years-old he may be getting a bit old, but £3 million is certainly cheap. A proven goalscorer at every level, Huntelaar would be a great, if short term option.
